New Braunfels Utilities released a statement Thursday that some of its customers, especially Spanish-speaking account holders, have reported being contacted by scammers identifying themselves as NBU employees.

"Customers are being told they must pay their NBU bill within a certain amount of time with a gift card or their services will be disconnected," the statement reads.

In an effort to prevent further incidents, NBU released some guidelines for customers to keep in mind if they receive a call:

  • All NBU phone numbers begin with area code 830.

  • NBU will never call from a 713 or 900 phone number.

  • NBU will never ask customers to purchase a gift card.

  • Most of NBU's courtesy calls are an automated voicemail.

  • If a call is received that threatens disconnection if immediate payment isn’t received, hang up.

  • NBU never goes door-to-door to collect payments.

  • Report scamming activities to the local law enforcement authorities.
