Donna Eccleston, a longtime Comal County commissioner for Precinct 1, is not seeking re-election. The Republican was first elected to the position in 2008.

A total of three candidates are vying for the chance to fill the seat she is vacating on the Comal County Commissioners Court.

Precinct 1 covers a northwestern portion of New Braunfels and stretches to Canyon Lake and the far western side of the county to the border with Kerr and Bexar counties.

Candidates were asked to keep responses under 50 words, answer the questions provided and avoid attacking opponents. Answers may have been edited or cut to adhere to those guidelines, or for style and clarity.

Community Impact is only asking candidates in contested Republican or Democratic primaries to answer questionnaires.

What is the most important issue facing residents, and how would you address it if elected?

Growth of the population and its impact on the budget. We must ensure that policies and budgets recognize the increased costs of living and do not unnecessarily add to these costs while we continue to fulfill our responsibility to provide law enforcement, maintain roads and other valued services.

If elected, how do you plan to represent all your constituency as a whole?

A commissioner is a local government position with the role of being my constituents first point of contact to discuss issues relevant to the community, and work to develop solutions. It is imperative that I will be available to all constituents by phone, email and personal contact.

What issues outside of the most important one named above are a high priority for you to address?

Persistent drought, coupled with population growth, has had a significant impact on the availability of water. Local solutions need to begin by coordinating with local leadership to lead by example and to communicate ways with the community to be better stewards of this natural resource.

What is the overall takeaway you want voters to understand about your campaign?

I am a result driven, natural leader who listens to those that I am serving and strives to produce meaningful solutions. Through effective communication and management of resources, I am confident that working with local leaders, government stakeholders and my peers, I will be an immediate asset to Commissioners Court.

Experience: I work on issues important to constituents every day in my current job.

Occupation: District director for state Sen. Donna Campbell

Contact Information: 830-481-8078

What is the most important issue facing residents, and how would you address it if elected?

Water. I will work with GBRA and local water companies to find better solutions to accommodate the growth that's here and the growth that's coming. If we don't work together to find better solutions, the new norm will be Canyon Lake at 55% or lower.

If elected, how do you plan to represent all your constituency as a whole?

I currently work for our state senator; before that I worked for our state representative. When a constituent needs assistance, I never ask if they are Republican or Democrat, I ask how can I help them. I make phone calls or search statutes to find a solution for them.

What issues outside of the most important one named above are a high priority for you to address?

Public safety; drugs/trafficking/Southern Texas border; transportation; growth; development/property rights/dwindling landscape; mental health needs; county budget/property tax rate; needs of local veterans; and the probable need for expansion of government services without raising tax rate.

What is the overall takeaway you want voters to understand about your campaign?

I currently work full-time, and daily, on issues that concern every citizen. We cannot afford on-the-job training for commissioner. I will walk in on day one and begin working for residents in Precinct 1 AND residents of Comal County. I am the only candidate with that ability.
