In response to growth throughout the district, Comal ISD board of trustees approved a request for $7.5 million to go toward adding additional staffing in the 2024-25 school year.

The district is projected to grow by 898 students in the upcoming 2024-25 school year. This results in approximately 30,235 students in the district, according to board documents.

The overview

Bobbi Supak, chief human resources officer at CISD, said that personnel and staffing utilizes about 80% of the district’s budget.

“We know budgets are tight, we know money is tight, but we also want to make sure that the campuses are staffed appropriately to serve the needs of our students,” Supak said.

There will be an estimated 41 teaching positions needed to accommodate for growth in the district, amounting to $2.7 million. Bulverde Middle School is also planned to open this fall and will require around 60 new positions, which will be an additional $3.6 million expenditure from the district.

The district is also hoping to grow the special education programming and add additional teachers to lower the teacher-to-student ratio in special education classrooms across the district. This will result in an additional $1.2 million toward staffing, according to Supak.

CISD administration has been reviewing demographic projections and the district budget to determine the staffing recommendation approved by the board of trustees during a Feb. 22 regular meeting, according to board documents.

What's next?

The staffing request will be the first of two presented to the board to allow principles of CISD campuses to recruit qualified teachers, according to board documents.
