The context
Mackenzie Yates, a kindergarten teacher at Klein Road Elementary in New Braunfels ISD, had 90 seconds to explore the aisles of an H-E-B store and fill her shopping cart with as much gear and supplies as she could.
“It was a big adrenaline rush and truly so much fun to participate in,” Yates said. “It was such an encouragement to have the support of my co-workers, administration and several H-E-B employees as I was racing through the aisles.”
The specifics
Yates said that by the end of the 90 seconds, with assistance from H-E-B staff, she was able to get a total of $1,966.67 worth of school supplies. Some of the items in her cart included highlighters and markers, technology projects, pencils, glue sticks, sticky notes and an entire shelf of Lysol spray.
“I know that these school supplies will bless teachers and students on my campus,” Yates said. “As teachers, we are constantly preparing. I hope that having these extra supplies will allow the prep work to be just a little simpler. Or even just bring a small ounce of joy to them, whether it is grading with a new pen or marker, or the security of knowing you have plenty of glue sticks for the school year.”
The big picture
H-E-B donated all the items collected during the shopping spree to classrooms throughout the participating school districts. Yates said she was thankful to take part in the experience.
“I know NBISD, and especially Klein Road Elementary, is very grateful for the opportunity to have gotten to participate in such a fun event with selfless motives,” Yates said.
