New Braunfels ISD broke ground on the first phase of the replacement campus for the original New Braunfels High School built in 1964.

The overview

On May 24, the district held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new campus, which will be located at 2551 Loop 337, New Braunfels.

Interim Superintendent James Largent said NBISD administration has been working for the past 16 months on planning the appearance and operations of the new campus.

“As you know, the population in this region has been on the rise and is not projected to stop anytime soon,” Largent said. “With this replacement of the high school, along with other projects in the 2021 bond, NBISD remains on track to keep up with the growth.

How we got here

The district has only had one high school for the past 178 years, and the replacement campus will provide room for the growing district. NBHS is a 6A school with over 2,000 students in 10th through 12th grades.

“This is only phase one of the replacement of this campus that will be utilized for decades to come by thousands of students,” NBISD board President Eric Bergquist said. “For the past 60 years, this building has served us well. With the continued growth in our community, this will not be the last school we build or need, nor will it be the last high school we build.”

The NBHS Ninth Grade Center holds the district's ninth-graders and will close in fall 2024 when the new NBHS is completed. The district will also open its brand-new second high school, Long Creek High School, in August 2024.

The framework

Funding for phase one of the project will be provided through the November 2021 bond program. The 196,000-square-foot facility will include a three-story classroom wing, a new commons area and library, a state-of-the-art career, and technical and general education classrooms. The Junior ROTC facility, tennis courts and practice field will be relocated to complete the first phase of construction.

“This project is poised to provide a 50- to 100-year footprint change on the community and site; we're building a school that's going to provide for generations to come,” Director of Construction Services for NBISD Mark Liggett said.

NBISD administration, the board of trustees, future NBHS students and the project team were among those in attendance for the ceremony.
