The Comal ISD board of trustees approved the names of two elementary schools and a middle school being constructed. The trustees received public feedback and input to assist in naming the future schools, but have the final authority and responsibility to name district facilities.

The board of trustees and those attending the meeting became emotional when making a motion to approve the name of Farias-Spitzer Elementary School for the district's 19th elementary school. The school will be named after former Comal ISD students Marine Sgt. Thomas Spitzer and Marine Lance Cpl. John Farias, who were both killed in action in Afghanistan.

“I think that as a district, these two young men, Farias and Mr. Spitzer, deserve the honor of a school in their name,” CISD Board Treasurer Tim Hennessee said.

Elementary School No. 20 had the options of Brady Elementary, named after a decorated war hero who lives in the area, or Comal Creek Elementary School, which is geographically significant to the area. Trustees voted to approve the name of Comal Creek Elementary for the new school.

The three options for the name of Middle School No. 8 included Bulverde Hills Middle School, John Bullis Middle School and Copper Brook Middle School. The board approved the name Bulverde Middle School, choosing to simplify the proposed name.

Next, the board of trustees will determine the mascots of the new schools at a future meeting.
