New Braunfels High School junior Grace Shafer was named a UIL State Outstanding Performer on Oct. 3, according to an NBISD news release.

Shafer gave a choral performance at the UIL State Solo & Ensemble Competition in June and was awarded with an honor given to less than 3% of UIL participants.

As an Outstanding Performer, Shafer stood out amongst more than 25,000 musicians and earned a medal comparable to those given to UIL event state champions, the release said.

Shafer sang a German piece for her audition entitled “Nur Wer Die Shensucht Kennt,” which translates to “None but the lonely heart.” It was a performance she shared with her late grandfather, Poppa, and the last song he was able to sing, the release said.

“One of my favorite things to do is perform,” Shafer said. “I enjoy this competition because it gives me the opportunity to perform pieces that I’m most passionate about. I look forward to what song is going to challenge me more.”
