A program aimed at suicide prevention will soon be in place at five schools in New Braunfels Independent School District.

According to information presented at the NBISD school board meeting Dec. 18, the Signs of Suicide Prevention Program aims at screening and educating students on symptoms of depression and letting them know it is treatable. The program is funded by the Texas Healthy Adolescent Initiative Grant and has been in place at the neighboring Comal ISD since the fall of 2018.

The program will be implemented at New Braunfels Middle School, Oak Run Middle School, Ninth Grade Center, School of Choice and New Braunfels High School.

During the meeting, the NBISD board of trustees also voted 5-2 to designate $423,864 of unallocated bond funds to upgrading the high school baseball field. The money will go toward replacing dugouts and security fencing.
