Family leaves Germany to pursue restaurant dream in New Braunfels

When it comes to the most important meal of the day, Fork & Spoon’s menu has a wide range of options.

From the locally famous French toast to the lengthy list of omelets, customers come back to eat a made-from-scratch breakfast as well as lunch and dinner.

Fork & Spoon has been serving the New Braunfels community for 10 years, and owners Thomas and Sonja Lauther—who are husband and wife— said they plan to keep the momentum going.

The Lauther family moved from Germany in 2013 to take ownership of Fork & Spoon. They purchased the restaurant before moving to the United States.

“It was always a dream for Thomas to own his own restaurant,” Sonja said.

The family said they were excited to leave their routines in Germany to start a new life in New Braunfels. Daughter Sarah Lauther was a member of the German Army and moved to New Braunfels after her parents.

“It was just a really spontaneous new beginning. In Germany—Monday through Friday—every day is the same thing, and we wanted to do something new,” Sarah said.

The family said they have plans to renovate the restaurant in the future.

“We want to bring quality to the people,” Sonja said.

Sarah said 80 percent of the restaurant’s servers have worked there for more than three years, which she said is impressive for the restaurant industry. They employ a German master baker in addition to three German chefs and two American chefs.

The family said they love their staff and the customers who dine there.

“It’s family. I have my parents here, but I don’t have my grandmas or aunts and uncles. So the customers I have, it’s kind of like I’m their granddaughter,” Sarah said.

Fork & Spoon also offers a catering service for weddings, birthdays, baby showers and other events.

The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch every day of the week, and they have the same menu during their dinner hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
