The Comal County Public Health Department reported Jan. 21 having 303 new COVID-19 cases in the county, bringing the total number of active cases during the pandemic to 25,206.

The total number of COVID-19-related fatalities since the beginning of the pandemic remained unchanged at 490. The last fatalities were reported on Jan. 18 and were from over the weekend—a Bulverde woman in her 80s and a New Braunfels man in his 70s.

A total of five coronavirus-related deaths of county residents have been reported since Jan. 3.

Comal County hospitals reported 63 COVID-19 patients. Of those, 12 were in intensive care units, five were in ICUs on ventilators. About 73% of all hospitalized COVID-19 patients were unvaccinated, according to the data.



The Guadalupe Regional Medical Center reported caring for 26 COVID-19 patients on Jan. 20 with a seven-day moving average of 24 patients per day. Guadalupe County has not issued an update on COVID-19 fatalities, active cases and hospitalizations since Dec. 30.


The Texas Department of State Health Services now reports total vaccine counts based on those 5 years old and up instead of 12 years old and up.

In Comal County, 71.87% of that population has received at least one dose, and 62.57% of the population is fully vaccinated. Of the county population 65 years and older, 99.70% has received at least one dose, and 88.95% of that population is fully vaccinated.

In Guadalupe County, 64.97% of those age 5 years old and up have received at least one dose, and 56.18% of that population is considered fully vaccinated. Of the county population 65 years and older, 88.73% has received at least one dose, and 78.23% of that population is fully vaccinated.

COVID-19 testing sites are available throughout the region, and many area pharmacies and healthcare providers currently offer vaccination appointments. Home testing kits are also available at some in-person and online retailers.
