Comal County commissioners on March 24 approved a modified burn ban for the unincorporated areas of the county.

The new ban will go into effect at 6 a.m. on March 25, according to a county press release, and will remain in effect for 90 days.

Unlike a traditional ban, county residents will be permitted to burn material on days with more than 25% humidity or when wind speeds are below 15 miles per hour.

“We do understand there will be some initial confusion with this burn ban and we are here to help you with that,” said Kory Klabunde, fire marshal for Comal County, in the release. “But due to the fuel load we currently have, the low humidity and the high winds that can happen this time of year, we just want everyone to be safe.”

According to the release the county fire marshal’s website will be updated daily to display wind speed and humidity levels, and residents can call 830-643-3748 with additional questions.
