Owners Michelle and Rex Rexilius began making candles with their daughter as a family project. Eventually, the hobby grew into selling some of their candles at local businesses around town and expanded into opening their own location and online store.
“I know that if you walk in here, you’re not going to see a lot of the same things that you see in other stores. ... So I feel like we’re unique in the sense that most of this stuff is handmade; we created it; and so it’s gonna be unique,” Michelle said.
New Braunfels Candle Co. also sells homemade bath and body products including bath bombs, beard oils, shower steamers and soaps. It offers pouring parties where groups or individuals can mix fragrances and create a candle of their own. It also released a line of signature fragrances that reflect the history and traditions of New Braunfels. The Plaza, Rivers Edge and Willkommen are the names of some of the candles.
“The fun part I think of making candles is blending and creating your own fragrance,” Michelle said. “So we kind of took the fun parts out of the candle making and let our customers come in and get to experience that.”
A trick Michelle enjoys telling her customers is to trim the wick of their candle after every use to allow for a cleaner and more consistent burn. Additionally, allow a candle to burn all the way across on its first use to utilize all the wax in the candle.
The Rexilius’ favorite part of owning the business is the interactions with customers and giving them something to use in their homes.
“I’m a people pleaser, and I like making people happy, and sometimes I just think fragrances can do that for you,” Michelle said. “I mean, that’s the goal. And the people that have supported us throughout the years have been a huge blessing.”
