One New Braunfels High School student has earned national recognition as a National Merit Commended Scholar.

The National Merit Scholarship Program awards students who receive high scores on the Preliminary SAT and National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, have a recommendation from their high school principal and maintain high academic performance through their high school career.

Jeremy Alkire, a senior, is the only NBHS student to be honored in this year’s program.

Alkire has been a member of the Mighty Unicorn Band throughout his four years at NBHS. He is a member of the LEO (Leadership, Excellence, Opportunity) Club, the Interact Club and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America).

In addition, Alkire is a UIL Academics regional champion in the Current Issues and Events competition.

Alkire hopes to attend Dartmouth College after graduation. He plans to study biological sciences and Spanish before pursuing a medical degree.
