Left-turn lanes and other road improvements are now planned for the Main Street and RM 1869 intersection in Liberty Hill.

What you need to know

City staff recommended left-turn lanes be implemented at the intersection instead of the originally planned right-turn lane during the Sept. 27 City Council meeting.

Engineer Curtis Steger said a right-turn lane would cause more interference—causing opposing traffic to travel toward each other. The new plan is to have left-turn lanes in both directions of Main Street with a shared right and straight through lane.

Steger also recommended the following improvements for the intersection:
  • Realigning the curb line at the southeast corner
  • Reconfiguring the existing island at the northeast corner

Steger said the work required to construct the turn lanes can be done without affecting the nearby businesses. The plan is to install barriers for protection and shift traffic for the flow pattern; however, no lane closures or detours are expected.

The project is estimated to cost $400,895, and construction is scheduled to begin around Christmastime, officials said.

Public outreach efforts will be underway leading up to the start of construction to receive feedback from business owners and residents in the area who may be affected by the noise.

Council did not take any action on the project as it was only a discussion. However, it was agreed that the project will be formally considered for approval at the Oct. 11 City Council meeting.
