Leander Planning and Zoning Commission approves in-home daycare capacity up to 6 children, rejects expanded proposal
After the Leander Planning and Zoning Commission approved an increase in the number of children allowed at in-home daycares in residential neighborhoods from five to six May 28, Leander City Council is set to consider finalizing any changes to the ordinance.
If approved by the Leander City Council, in-home daycares would be allowed to look after an additional child. The commission also voted down a motion that would have allowed in-home daycares to earn a permit to care for six additional children after school.
By allowing up to six children to be cared for at an in-home daycare, Leander would match the base number of children allowed at residential daycares in surrounding cities like Cedar Park, Georgetown, Round Rock, Taylor and Hutto.
Leander officials greenlight zoning change for proposed Life Time gym
The Leander Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted May 14 to approve a new planned unit development for the gym chain Life Time, an upscale athletic country club, on two parcels totaling 14 acres at 11675 Hero Way West.
The land, which is north of the South Street Villas, was originally split-zoned for a mix of townhomes and commercial use. With the approval of the rezoning to create Life Time’s PUD—a special zoning designation—the business could operate from 4 a.m. to midnight, with amplified sound from the planned pool deck allowed between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Life Time is seeking to construct a 100,000-square-foot fitness center featuring a spa, salon and cafe, according to a letter of intent submitted to the commission. The proposed location would include outdoor facilities, including an outdoor pool deck with a play area for children and an amplified sound system.
City Council will vote on finalizing the zoning changes.
Fiscal year 2025-26 Capital Improvement Program
After a presentation on the fiscal year 2025-26 Capital Improvement Program plan May 21, the Leander City Council will consider whether to approve the FY 2025-26 CIP projects approved for funding in the FY 2025-26 annual budget.
The program, which plans 10 years into the future, includes projects costing roughly $19.5 million that will continue from FY 2025-26, city documents state. Additionally, over $260 million of projects are planned for fiscal years 2025-26 to 2029-30. In total, costs for the planned projects for the 10 years are estimated to surpass $800 million, according to city documents.
Projects in the CIP include the construction of a new firehouse in northeast Leander, plans for the new city hall and the construction of a recreation center.
