Liberty Hill ISD is one step closer to selecting a mascot and colors for its second high school opening in 2024.

Current situation

Legacy Ranch High School Principal Mark Koller and students from Santa Rita Middle School presented students’ top mascot and color recommendations for Legacy Ranch High School at a Nov. 13 board of trustees meeting.

The top three mascots favored by Santa Rita Middle School students were leopards, wranglers and rattlers. The following color combinations were also presented:
  • Purple and black
  • Black and gold
  • Black and Vegas gold
  • Navy and gold
  • Columbia blue and navy

How we got here

The recommendations came after the district surveyed eighth grade students at Santa Rita Middle School on three categories of mascots: cat nation, ranch theme and alliteration starting with an L or R. About 80% of respondents voted for cat nation followed by ranch theme and alliteration.

A group of 45 students across grade levels recently met with VLK Architects to narrow down top mascot and color ideas, which were presented to the board Nov. 13, Koller said.

Quote of note

“They were very mature and very methodical in the process of really looking through not only what’s great for an eighth grader at this moment but also what would be great for this high school 100 years from now,” Koller said about the Santa Rita Middle School students.

The background

Legacy Ranch will open to incoming ninth graders at Middle School No. 3 next school year until its official campus opens for the 2026-27 school year. The district hired former Leander ISD Principal Mark Koller as the principal for Legacy Ranch in October.

The board of trustees is now considering the mascot and color options presented and will make a final decision at an undetermined date, said Rachel Acosta, LHISD director of communications and community engagement.
