Leander ISD experienced the most growth in student enrollment out of any Austin Metro school district from fall 2016 to fall 2017, according to a new demographic report by Population and Survey Analysts, or PASA.

The PASA report shows district enrollment could climb to 51,890 students by 2028 in a moderate-growth scenario.

At the board of trustees meeting Oct. 25, Stacey Tepera and Pat Guseman of PASA presented long-range planning options for new schools to address the predicted growth, which is expected to be strongest in the northern portion of LISD.

"The growth in the northern part of the district is pretty phenomenal," LISD Superintendent Dan Troxell said.

Parkside, Pleasant Hill, Bagdad and Mason elementary schools—as well as LISD’s 27th elementary school, scheduled to open in the Larkspur neighborhood in 2019—are all anticipated to see increases of over 700 students in the upcoming decade, according to the report.

PASA projected the following needs for new schools:

  • 2020: New elementary school in the area around Ronald Reagan Boulevard and FM 2243

  • 2020: New middle school near Glenn High School

  • 2022: New elementary school in the Travisso area

  • 2024: New elementary school in the Bryson area

  • 2024 or 2025: New middle school in northeastern part of the district

  • 2024: New high school

  • 2026: New elementary school in the area generally around Glenn High School

  • 2026: New elementary school in the northeastern area of the district
