Leander ISD’s Information Technology Services department has started implementing a "remote content filtering system” on district-owned mLISD devices, LISD announced last week on its website.

The update will ensure the devices are filtered off-campus in the same way as they are while on all LISD campuses, according to the statement. In accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act, the district must restrict students from accessing sites that are considered inappropriate, unsafe or unauthorized for minors, according to the Federal Communications Commission.

The district also blocks some social-networking websites and movie or music websites such as Netflix or Pandora, according to LISD’s internet filtering FAQ.

“Learning extends from the classroom into the public spaces and homes outside of our walls,” said Laurie Vondersaar, senior executive director for LISD’s Information Technology Services. “As an institution for learning, we are excited for the opportunity to continuously improve our support by working with our students, families and teachers to ensure we provide a safe and functional portal to the web."

The district began piloting the filter on high school campuses in October, according to the district’s statement. The filter update, which could take a few weeks to be completely deployed, will be installed on student devices when they are on and attached to the LISD network.
