Pamela Waggoner Pamela Waggoner[/caption] Three Leander ISD trustees' terms are coming to an end. On Nov. 8, district residents will choose representatives for Places 3, 4 and 5. Here are four things to know about the upcoming board election: 1. There are four candidates in the race for three seats, so far. Three incumbents—Vice President Pamela Waggoner, Secretary Grace Barber-Jordan and Trustee Russell Bundy—all said they will run to retain their seats on the board. Waggoner, who holds Place 3, faces challenger Chris Remy. No one has filed yet to run against Barber-Jordan or Bundy. Grace Barber-Jordan Grace Barber-Jordan[/caption] 2. There is still time to file. The deadline to file for candidacy is by 5 p.m. Aug. 22. 3. Elected trustees will serve during the 85th legislative session. The Texas Legislature convenes Jan. 10, 2017. Members of the LISD board of trustees and other school boards in the state have the opportunity to act as advocates for students during this time, including petitioning lawmakers for school funding. In a position paper, Remy said, if elected, he would take advantage of LISD’s proximity to the state capital to testify before legislators and advocate for more local control of teacher evaluations, curriculums and state funding. The district has a new superintendent. Current trustees voted 6-0 to name Dan Troxell, the current Kerrville ISD superintendent, the lone finalist in LISD’s superintendent search. Troxell is scheduled to begin his new role Aug. 29. Waggoner said she hopes to work with Troxell to bring magnet schools, elementary-level University Interscholastic League, or UIL academics, and more programs for gifted and talented students to LISD. Waggoner also said the district needs to improve its support of students in Title I schools—an area in which Troxell has experience. Chris Remy Chris Remy[/caption] Bundy, who holds Place 5, said a common question during interviews with potential superintendents was whether the current trustees planned to continue on the board. “It brings stability to a district,” Bundy said. Barber-Jordan, who holds Place 4, did not return requests for comment.
