Bob and Mike’s Chicken in Cedar Park sells 800 pounds of chicken each week, Manager Carl Nothnagel said.
The restaurant, which celebrates its five-year anniversary in April, offers fresh chicken tenders and bites, salads and side dishes.
Customers can choose among fried and grilled chicken as well as Buffalo-style chicken.
“We get the chicken through Sanderson Farms in Waco,” Nothnagel said. “Our specialty [is] chicken tenders. They are fresh—never frozen. We also make most of our sides and our sauces here and offer many healthy options, like salad or green beans.”
The restaurant’s founder, Bob O’Farrell, had a history in fine dining and developed his own recipes, Nothnagel said. O’Farrell is retired, but his recipes are still being used. Bob and Mike’s Chicken is now owned by O’Farrell’s son, Michael, and is run by three managers, Nothnagel said.
The business was founded in 2009 and first located at the Arbor Walk shopping center in Northwest Austin. In 2011 the restaurant moved to Cedar Park, and it has been a successful location for the business, he said.
Nothnagel said the eatery benefits from its close proximity to the Austin Community College campus and other nearby schools that bring in lunch customers and large crowds before school sporting events.
About 75 percent of the business comprises drive-thru customers. Bob and Mike’s has about 70 seats as well as an outside playground with several benches. Customers can also call orders in for pickup or order for delivery at www.localeatanddrink.com.
Customer Randy Wedlund from Cedar Park works at the nearby ACC campus and said he eats at Bob and Mike’s Chicken for lunch several times a week. He likes the variety of the meals and the fact that the restaurant also offers healthy options, Wedlund said.
“Sometimes I’m in the mood for fried chicken, sometimes Buffalo, sometimes grilled. I like to change it up a little bit,” he said. “The first time I ate there was when they first opened in Cedar Park. I got the Buffalo chicken. It’s fried and comes with the hot wing sauce that they dip it in. It has a kick. They also put that in a wrap. Either one of those is good.”
Wedlund said he also enjoys the housemade green tea.
“It’s wonderful,” he said. “It is almost addicting. I refer to it as liquid gold because of the color. Folks ought to try it at least once.”
