Leander ISD’s 26th elementary school will open in August for the 2017-18 school year, and the process of naming the new school has begun. Nominations will be accepted from the public until Jan. 20. The LISD board of trustees will receive a preliminary list of name nominations at its Jan. 19 meeting, said Veronica Sopher, assistant superintendent of community and governmental relations. The board will receive a complete list of nominations after the Jan. 20 deadline, and it will discuss nominations at its February board meeting, she said. The board could vote on a name in February or choose to push the decision to a later date, Sopher said. The school administration does not recommend names; it only compiles nominations submitted by the public, she said. According to district policy, the new school could be named after the community in which it is located. Elementary School No. 26 will be located in front of Stiles Middle School on Barley Road in Leander. The name could also come from a historical site or event, or a significant individual. If the nominated name is after an individual, it must be a widely respected person of character who embodies a wholesome image and carries a background of service to the residents of LISD, Texas or the United States. Trustees approved an attendance zone for the school in June. The new school will relieve overcrowding at Reagan, Pleasant Hill, Whitestone and Parkside elementary schools. Residents may submit name nominations online or call 512-570-0000 and request a nomination form.
