The Village of Volente City Council raised the property tax rate by 1.9 percent for fiscal year 2017-18, according to a village ordinance.

Property owners in Volente will be levied the new ad valorem tax rate of $0.1085 per $100 of assessed valuation, according to the ordinance. Travis County tax records state that Volente’s adopted property tax rate for FY 2016-2017 was $0.1065 per $100 of assessed valuation.

However, the new property tax rate is lower than the village’s rate in previous years, said Steve Baker, Volente mayor pro tem and chair of the finance committee. For example, the adopted tax rate in 2013 was $0.13 per $100 of assessed valuation, according to Travis County tax records.

The increase in tax revenue will generate an additional $15,905 for the village compared to the year prior, according to Volente’s approved FY 2017-18 budget.

“The Village is planning several activities which required an increase in the cost of outside consultants,” Baker said. “We were able to keep the tax rate low in spite of these additional costs with some net reductions in operating and maintenance costs and pulling some funds from budgeted items not fully spent in previous years.”

Baker said some of the activities include oversight of the Brushy Creek Regional Utility Authority’s pipeline project, architectural services for a new city office and a rewrite of the village’s comprehensive plan.
