Multiple public safety agencies in Williamson and Travis counties responded to five reports of house fires during thunderstorms on Monday, and an investigation by the Leander Fire Department has shown all of the fires were caused by lightning strikes.

According to a Leander Fire Department press release, the reports of fires were on Goodnight Trail, Lookout Range Drive, and Monahans, Yaupon Range and Shumard Bluff drives.

Three of the reported homes received heavy fire damage, according to the release. Damage to the home on Goodnight is estimated at $600,000, damage to the house on Lookout Range is estimated at $270,000 and damage to the home on Monahans is estimated at $225,000. Fires reported at Yaupon Range and Shumard Bluff drives were grass fires that were brought under control with no damage to the surrounding areas, according to the fire department.

In a statement on social media Monday, Leander Fire Chief Bill Gardner said the Austin, Florence, Georgetown, Liberty Hill and Round Rock fire departments and Georgetown EMS, Travis County Emergency Services District No. 1, Williamson County Emergency Communications, Williamson County EMS, the Leander Police Department and the Williamson County sheriff’s office helped respond to the fires.

Gardner said all five calls came within a 35-minute time frame and were in different sections of Leander’s response area. He thanked the various agencies for providing support and thanked citizens who had provided water, snacks, best wishes and prayers to those working the fires.

“It is greatly appreciated by all the firefighters and responders,” he said.
