A statue depicting a Marine serving in the Korean War is coming to Veterans Memorial Park, located at 2525 W. New Hope Drive in Cedar Park.

Cedar Park City Council authorized commissioning the sculpture during its meeting Thursday night.

The idea originated in 2015 when City Council discussed a desire to see new military sculptures installed in the park. Since then, the city has installed a World War I doughboy sculpture and a World War II naval commander sculpture in the park, said Kimberly Reese, the assistant to the city manager.

The Cedar Park Parks, Arts and Community Enrichment Board also voted unanimously to recommend the commission of the statue to City Council during a June 12 meeting.

Reese said the proposed statue design was crafted by artist Matt Glenn and would cost $38,900. The project would be funded using public art funds, according to city documents.

Council’s action on Thursday authorizes the city manager to execute an agreement for the commissioning of the sculpture, according to city documents.
