Gas Logs Express & BBQ in Cedar Park is expanding. The business will be moving to a bigger space in the same shopping mall where the retailer now sits at 200 S. Bell Blvd. in late September or early October, owner and operator David Brown said.
Gas Logs Express sells grills for different cooking preferences as well as fireplaces and equipment, Brown said.
Brown, who is certified by the National Fireplace Institute, said he had been installing gas logs for other companies for nearly 20 years before opening his other business, Chipper Golf Driving Range, formerly Cedar Park Driving Range, at 1700 Hur Industrial Blvd. in 2010.
Brown said he opened the driving range to keep busy during the spring when business died down.
Gas Logs Express began as a small retail business selling gas logs and ceramic grills at the driving range in a 400-square-foot space before moving to its current location in 2014 and expanding its inventory.
Brown now sells ceramic, gas and pellet grills; fireplaces; glass doors for fireplaces; and alternatives to logs such as fire glass and rocks.
“We are now on 12,000 square feet and are jumping up to 17,000 square feet because we are out of room here,” he said.
With the additional space, Brown said he plans to have more inventory and create a showroom for outdoor kitchens, including grills. Gas Logs Express tries to give customers several choices in all price ranges, he said. And the demand has increased significantly, he said.
“We were selling gas logs like crazy, but we didn’t have a lot of business during the springtime. So then we brought in the grills, and now the grills are starting to take off,” he said.
Ceramic grills work with charcoal and require the most work to keep them burning, Brown said. He said pellet grills, which work with wood pellets, are less work-intensive and still give the food a smoky flavor.
“I almost call the pellet grill a hybrid between a gas grill and a ceramic smoker,” he said. “A lot of people buy a gas grill for quick, fast grilling during the week. And they’ll buy a ceramic smoker for the weekend where it’s [cooking] low and slow.”
But pellet grills are becoming more popular, he said.
The new space will also allow him to enter a partnership with Daulton Point Construction, a Cedar Park-based company that specializes in custom homebuilding and remodeling.
