Small changes can make a big difference over time when it comes to ergonomics—the scientific discipline of fitting the work environment to people’s physical attributes such as height and size, Goldtouch CEO Mark Norwalk said.
“Small little distresses over time eventually compound into something that the user feels,” Norwalk said. “Once they feel that [pain], sometimes they’ve already had significant damage. So you want to prevent that from happening through good ergonomic practices.”
Goldtouch develops ergonomic computer accessories to help users work more comfortably and reduce repetitive strain injuries, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Norwalk said. The company’s products include fully adjustable keyboards, ergonomic mice, laptop and tablet stands, and numeric keypads.
Goldtouch sells its products through resellers and distributors to small- and mid-sized businesses. Larger clients include Apple Inc., Chevron Corp., Google Inc. and Toyota Motor Corp. Products are available for individual purchase at local retailers, such as The Human Solution in Austin, and on the company’s website. The desktop and mobile keyboards developed by Goldtouch can be customized because of a patented ball-joint design, which can allow the keyboard to be tented or splayed, allowing proper angles horizontally and vertically, and then locked to fit the wrist angle of an individual user.
Thomas Rowell, a certified professional ergonomist, said companies can save money and improve employee retention by investing in ergonomic solutions.
“If you impact the physical well-being of the employee, you are directly impacting the financial well-being of the organization,” Rowell said. “I like the fact that [Goldtouch has] options, and options are critical when you’ve got ... different people in an office [with] different physical characteristics. One size never fits all.”
