After working in the fitness and health industry for 12 years as well as practicing and eventually teaching yoga, Jen Daugherty opened Trybe Yoga, a community that has a different vibe and feel than the yoga places that she knew, she said.

“I wanted to do something a little different where everybody is much more connected,” Daugherty said. “Where it is much more like a family, less like a gym.”

Daugherty said she had a tribe in mind when deciding on the name for her business, and her husband suggested a different spelling for the word as well as the philosophy “try yoga—be yoga.”

After she chose the name, Daugherty said she had to overcome a few hurdles to open the business. The space that she had originally planned to put the studio in fell through at the last minute.

“I was ready to give up. I thought this was a sign [that] we can’t do this,” she said.

But she said her father told her to not give up because she had never given up on anything. She then found the current space coincidentally.

“I called the [leasing agent’s phone] number and within 12 hours had a contract in hand.”

Trybe Yoga’s space was a former hair salon and needed many renovations, but Daugherty completed them within less than 72 hours to offer classes for the first time on May 5, 2015 in Leander.

Trybe Yoga offers more than 25 classes seven days per week. Nine teachers contribute to a variety of yoga styles, from Spirit Restore to All Levels Flow to Athletes Yoga. Classes are open to experienced yogis as well as beginners.

In addition, a therapist gives massages by appointment. The studio also provides off-site classes and workshops in cooperation with different partners, Daugherty said. Off-site classes include Yoga and Beer at Whitestone Brewery in Cedar Park.

Daugherty said she tries to keep classes small, which allows each participant to have personal space.

“Our classes are really intimate, very connected; everybody knows everyone,” she said. “We want to make sure that [students] get to the class that suits [them] physically, mentally, spiritually. It is in the students’ best interest to get them where they need to be.”

Patty Ortega takes Trybe’s classes six days a week and said she enjoys the feeling of camaraderie at the studio.

“I love it here. The teachers are very sensitive and encouraging. You can be yourself,” Ortega said.

Maria Perez from Avery Ranch said she appreciates the genuine, caring vibe of the studio.

“I moved here last April, tried the studio once and was in love,” Perez said. “The atmosphere is loving. You are here to not just work out, but to nurture yourself.”
