The city of Cedar Park is looking to increase its art collection and will consider commissioning a public safety statue that will sit at the Cedar Park Police Department during its first meeting of 2018.

According to the Jan. 11 City Council agenda packet, the proposed sculpture is meant to honor those who have served the city as public safety professionals, and it will serve as a memorial to those that have been killed in the line of duty.

City Council plans to take action that would authorize the city manager to enter into an agreement with artist Daniel Borup for $72,000 to commission the statue. The proposed design will feature two bronze figures—a firefighter and a police officer—on a raised platform, according to city documents. Three plaques will remember two police officers and one volunteer firefighter who have been killed in the line of duty—Officer William Laws, Officer Leonard Reed and Volunteer Firefighter Wayne Buford.
