With the motto, "First 72 on You," local governments are encouraging residents to have enough resources to last them 72 hours during an emergency event. These emergency kits include water, food, flashlights, blankets and other items necessary for basic survival until emergency responders can reach residents. Here are some of the most important items to keep in mind:

  • One gallon of water per person per day

  • At least a three-day supply of nonperishable food

  • A first aid kit

  • A cell phone with chargers and a backup battery

  • A lashlight

  • A battery-powered or hand-crank radio

  • Extra batteries

  • A sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person

  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties (for sanitation)

  • A whistle (to signal for help)

  • A wrench or pliers (to turn off utilities)

  • Food and water for pets

  • Prescription and nonprescription medication
