Following more than a year of planning and previous delays, construction began Aug. 10 on Lakeway’s RM 620 median project, according to an update from Lakeway Mayor Sandy Cox.

The safety improvements project will alter previous turning options with the installation of 6-inch raised medians along RM 620’s center lane spanning from Lohmans Crossing Road to the north end of Bella Montagna Circle.

The project carries a $378,218 price tag and will be fully funded by Texas Department of Transportation, according to Bradley Wheelis, TxDOT public information officer, who said construction is slated to last about two months.

“This has been long-awaited,” Cox said during the broadcast. “[TxDOT] believes [construction is] going to take about three weeks, and I say 'believe' because they’ve had a number of delays because of COVID-19.”

Lakeway City Council voted to approve the transportation project in December with the goal of completing the improvements prior to the massive RM 620 widening project, which will increase the road from four to six lanes.

Work will predominantly occur during overnight hours from 9 p.m.-5 a.m. and may require lane closures and detours, Cox said, emphasizing cautious driving during these times. Portable message signs will also be placed on-site to guide vehicles.
