According to Copeland family friend Jess Davis, Aaron Cable, head catching instructor at Hill Country Baseball Club, said member Brodie Copeland was "a talented athlete." In an email, Cable said he had worked with Brodie almost weekly since the family moved to Lakeway two years ago and was at a Florida tournament with the family before they left for Europe. He said the "close-knit baseball club is rallying around the family."
“[Brodie is] an overall talented, Renaissance-man kind of kid,” Cable said in the email. "Sean [Copeland] is just one of the greatest dads you could ask for. He would do whatever he needed to do to make sure Brodie got baseball lessons, acting lessons and everything he ever needed or wanted. He was a good guy, who cared about his kids.”

Two Lakeway residents were among the victims of a July 14 attack on a Bastille Day celebration in Nice, France. Sean Copeland, age 51, and his son Brodie, age 11, were on vacation when they were killed when a truck rammed into pedestrians and gunshots fired into the crowd of festival-goers.

"We are heartbroken and in shock over the loss of Brodie Copeland, an amazing son and brother who lit up our lives, and Sean Copeland, a wonderful husband and father," said the Copeland family in a statement published by family friend Jess Davis. "They are so loved."
The trip was partially in celebration of the July birthdays of Sean's wife and his older son, said Davis, who said she has known the Copelands since 2009. The family visited Pamplona, Spain, and Barcelona before reaching Nice, she said. Sean's brothers will fly with State Department officials to bring home the family members including Brodie and Sean, she said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Copeland family in their time of mourning," Lakeway Mayor Joe Bain said. "The Lakeway community is like family, and we have lost two of our members. We stand together with the Copelands. We grieve the loss of Sean and Brodie Copeland of Lakeway and all the innocent lives taken in last night’s attack in Nice."
