Rollingwood to consider implementing surveillance technology

"If we take certain precautions with the data and with how the cameras are used ... and most importantly, in my mind, if we can have a system that has real-time monitoring capabilities within our police vehicles ... It is a force multiplier if one or two cruisers can monitor five or six different locations at 2 or 3 in the morning,” Mayor Gavin Massingill said. “That’s what I think makes this pill worth swallowing.”

Community input has also emphasized a need for privacy protection, data ownership and complete transparency, according to city documents.

However, some community members believe the cameras will help minimize crime, Rollingwood Chief of Police Kristal Muñoz said.

“This is something that has been brought back to us by residents that had a desire for the cameras,” Muñoz said.

What’s next

City Council will continue drafting an ordinance that provides a regulatory framework for the deployment and use of surveillance technology.

Once the ordinance is complete, discussions surrounding authorizing requests for proposals will continue if the council deems the surveillance technology as feasible and necessary.

“We had a lockdown because of something happening at Zilker Park just a couple of months ago,” council member Sara Hutson said. “With proper precautions for data security, I can see there being some benefit to having this in place.”
