Bee Cave City Council authorized requesting proposals for consultants April 14 in order to update the city’s comprehensive plan, “Our Bee Cave 2037,” following the Planning and Zoning Commission’s unanimous recommendation that the council approve the issuance April 7.
The context
One of the primary reasons for updating the comprehensive plan is that it has not been revised since its adoption in November 2016, Assistant City Manager Christopher Baker said.
“A lot has changed in Bee Cave over that time frame,” Baker said. “The [comprehensive plan], in order to remain current and more importantly, relevant ... has to keep up with the times.”
The “best practice” is for the plan to be analyzed every year before City Council and the Planning and Zoning Commission, with updates typically occurring every five years, Baker said.
The details
New infrastructure, national standards and resident preferences all contribute to the need for updating the plan. Public engagement and input will also play a critical role in determining what needs to be included in the update, Baker said.
“It’s very important... to touch base with the community and hear what’s working very well or what maybe needs to be adjusted,” Baker said.
Town halls, virtual town hall meetings and a new on-demand system for residents to provide feedback on the comprehensive plan are laid out in the city's request for proposals.
What’s next
A selection committee will independently evaluate and score each proposal and collaboratively rank each one, followed by interviews of the candidates. The final selection will be presented to Bee Cave City Council for approval.
It is expected that the process will take 12-16 months.
