The city of Lakeway will hold an election May 3 to elect three council members and a mayor. Current terms expiring include those of Mayor Thomas Kilgore, Mayor Pro Tem Gretchen Vance, and council members Christopher Forton and Kent O’Brien. Of these, only Vance is ineligible to run for re-election, as she has already served for three consecutive terms.

Kilgore has served as mayor since 2021, Vance has been on council since 2019, and council members Forton and O’Brien have held their seats since 2023. A list of current council members and when their terms expire is available on Lakeway’s website.

The overview

A full list of candidates for City Council seats have not been announced as of press time. The first day for candidates to file an application to appear on the ballot was Jan. 15, and the final deadline for candidates to file applications is Feb. 14.

Term limits for council members are set at two years, according to the city’s charter. No council member or mayor may serve for more than six consecutive years.

The city requires candidates to be registered Lakeway voters, at least 21 years old and to not hold any other compensated public office or city employee position.

What it means

Election costs for the city’s current fiscal year have been budgeted at $48,000. This number is based on previous years’ expenditures.

A contract with Travis County for election services will be presented on the city’s next agenda on Feb. 3, City Secretary Desiree Adair said.

What else?

Other ballot items were discussed at the council’s Jan. 26 meeting, including new charter amendment propositions, which will be finalized and submitted by Feb. 14.
