At a Sept. 18 meeting, Rollingwood City Council approved a $121,143 cost increase for water and drainage projects near Nixon/Pleasant Drive and Hubbard Circle/Hatley Drive.

Some context

The projects are part of the Water Systems Capital Improvements Plan, partly funded by a 2022 voter-approved bond for $5.3 million.

The plan aims to address issues with the city's water system, such as main breaks, dysfunctional valves, high and low pressure areas, as well as drainage issues, according to city documents.

What happened

Both drainage projects for Nixon/Pleasant Drive and Hubbard Circle/Hatley Drive involve the installation of a storm sewer, according to city documents.

Work on the drainage projects began in January, but according to Project Engineer for K Friese + Associates Greg Blackburn, several conflicts were identified throughout the process that raised the total contract cost to $6.6 million.

The details

Most notably, adjustments are required for a sewer line discovered at the project area for Nixon/Pleasant Drive, which could cost up to $111,912.

Other reasons for the cost increase include two additional manholes, pavement repairs, boulders at the end of the culvert and other miscellaneous adjustments.

The adjustments will be funded through a mix of the city's drainage funds, water contingency funds and wastewater reserve funds.

What's next

While both projects were expected to wrap up by March 2025, the adjustments are expected to add around 43 days to the construction timelines, according to the change order.
