The gist
At an Aug. 13 meeting, City Council unanimously approved the ban following resident concerns about a high volume of nighttime solicitors.
The amendment to the city code will also change the permitting process for solicitors to comply with state law.
Before, the police department conducted background checks and issued solicitor permits, but now, the planning and development department will handle the same process.
A city spokesperson said this will make the approval process more efficient, as the department already handles other business permits within the city.
The details
Per the city code, the department may refuse to issue a solicitation permit if certain criminal or other offenses are found.
Additionally, a solicitation permit can be revoked if numerous valid complaints are received.
A permit is not required for political or religious canvassers, unless they are soliciting donations or fundraising.
What residents should know
The new changes will go into effect Sept. 1, according to a city spokesperson.
Any resident approached by a solicitor may ask for identification and the permit paper.
If a solicitor does not have a permit, residents may call the nonemergency line at 512-261-2800 to report the violation.
