Starting this week, the city of Lakeway will employ goats to clear vegetation around town.

To celebrate, Lakeway residents are invited to attend a free petting zoo hosted by the city Aug. 18.

What's happening

The family-friendly event will run from 12-3 p.m. at Lakeway City Hall Trail, between Lakeway City Hall and the Lakeway Activity Center.

A variety of animals including goats, sheep, donkeys and a miniature horse will be available for viewing.

Lunch will be served by CraigO's Pizza.

The details

The clearing project will be the first of its kind in Lakeway, focusing on overgrown parts of the city hall trail, rights-of-way along Lakeway Boulevard, and green areas near the pond by Lakeway Drive, according to a news release.

The goats are able to safely remove invasive plants and harmful species such as poison oak, ivy and thistle from the areas.

City spokesperson Jarrod Wise said the city purchased the service from the local Texas company Rent-A-Ruminant, which also uses herding dogs to direct the goats.

What residents should know

Throughout the process, which will take several weeks, the goats will be kept in enclosed spaces and will not be accessible for the public to pet or feed, Wise said.

Zooming out

Lakeway isn't the first city to employ furry helpers for its landscaping—Bee Cave did the same earlier this year.

The age-old practice is not only less expensive, but it's also more eco-friendly, requiring no large lawn equipment, Wise said.
