The Westlake High School Parent Teacher Organization donated $57,531.23 to Eanes ISD for the construction of an outdoor classroom at Westlake High School.
The board of trustees voted to accept the donation during a special board meeting Sept. 9.
According to a memorandum presented to the board, the outdoor classroom and gathering area have been in the planning stages for a number of months and have involved parents, high school staff, and managing and operating staff. A reservation system will be implemented following the completion date.
“In addition to classroom space, it will offer covered lunch and meeting areas, which are desperately needed to the expanding population,” the memorandum states.
Teachers at Westlake High were surveyed on whether they would utilize the outdoor space for their classes with 85.5% of participating teachers answering yes.
Once funds are approved, construction is projected to take about four months, according to district information.
