The Lake Travis board of trustees decided on a school name, announced an incoming middle school principal and reviewed employee survey results during a June 19 meeting.
Name and mascot for “Middle School Number 3” unmasked
“Middle School Number 3” finally lost its code name Tuesday as the school district voted to decide on the school’s new name and mascot—Bee Cave Middle School with red and silver raiders as its mascot.
The name and mascot were each the winner out of 10 top suggestions reviewed at the district’s May 16 meeting. Board member Kim Flasch said it was a daunting task for the board to make up its mind among so many choices.
During the meeting, Lake Travis ISD Superintendent Brad Lancaster pointed out that the middle school site is currently located in an extra-territorial jurisdiction of the city of Bee Cave, and could be annexed into the city in the future. Most of the board members nominated "Bee Cave" as their favorite.
The runner-up for the school's mascot was musketeers, which was recommended by board members Bob Dorsett and John Aoueille.
New principal selected for Lake Travis Middle School
Lancaster announced Sherry Baker as the next Lake Travis Middle School Principal during the district's meeting. Baker will assume her new role starting July 2 and is replacing Jodie Villemaire, the current principal of the middle school.
Villemaire will start her new job as the district’s director of Elementary Learning and Teaching July 1, LTISD documents show.
Baker said during the meeting that she is entering her 21st year in public education. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, Baker entered the education industry as an eighth-grade math teacher at Dean Middle School in the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. After six years of teaching, she took her first administrative position as an assistant principal at the same school and remained in administrative positions over the next 10 years. She most recently served as the head of Wildwood Elementary School in Tomball, a campus she opened in 2015.
Baker will soon have a meet-and-greet with Lake Travis Middle School parents, district staff said.
TASB Employee Opinion Survey results show increased trust in district leadership but lower confidence in fair pay
Results from a survey on Lake Travis ISD employee opinions were presented before and discussed by the district leaders during the Tuesday meeting. A total of 834 employees, the majority of which are teachers, participated in the survey in January.
Mostly consistent with the findings in 2016, the district earned an overall high score this year in several aspects. According to the survey results, at least 89 percent of the participants expressed satisfaction toward their job; 84 percent of all participants expressed trust in the district leaders acting on behalf of the students' interest; 94 percent of all felt a safe working environment; and over 90 percent were happy about their relationships with coworkers.
Nearly 70 percent of the participants believed meaningful work is among the top factors that contribute to their job satisfaction. The participants recorded a “notably high increase,” from 79 percent in 2016 to 85 percent this year, regarding opportunities to learn from others, the results said.
Compared to the large numbers above, however, less participants were satisfied with their workload, fair pay or access to express concerns to district leaders. Less than 70 percent of the participants found the workload assigned to them appropriate; 66 percent agreed that they could communicate their concerns with district leaders; and only 42 percent believed their pay was fair, which showed a 2-point decrease from 2016 and a 9-point decrease from 2013.
Additionally, 74 percent of the participants agreed that their campus is clean and well maintained. That number has seen a 20-point drop since 2014.
In response to the results, Flasch said she appreciated that the survey is conducted on a regular basis. Lancaster said that he hopes for engagement from more participants and better communication with employees in terms of salary and benefits.
