The Lake Travis ISD board of trustees recognized district students who competed in the 2018 Travis County Youth Show at Tuesday night’s meeting.

A student won grand champion, reserve grand champion and senior champion for her market steer and another student won grand champion in the meat rabbits category. District students also placed in market barro, market goat, preserves, photography and agricultural mechanics.

This is the third year in a row that Lake Travis FFA students have earned grand champion recognition at the show, held January 11-13 at the Travis County Expo Center.

The Lake Travis FFA Chapter had about 60 members and three Junior FFA members exhibit about 150 projects at the annual show, according to a staff report in the April 17 agenda packet. Projects ranged from livestock of all sizes to artwork, jewelry, photography, shop work and foods.

The students competed for ribbons, rosettes, buckles and money in the premium auction. About half of the exhibitors “made sale” and reaped an estimated $67,000 for students to use toward scholarships or to fund projects for next year. In all, 21 students placed at the show.

About 300 students are enrolled in the Lake Travis High School Agriculture program due in large part to FFA, the meeting packet said. Founded in 1928 as Future Farmers of America, the organization was renamed in 1988 to the National FFA Organization, now commonly referred to as FFA. About 150 agriculture students are members of the Lake Travis FFA chapter.

“In addition to production agriculture, FFA is a Career and Technical Education organization which recognizes individuals with diverse interests in the food, fiber, and natural resource industries, encompassing science, technology and business,” the packet said.

Kelly White and Perry White are co-advisors of the Lake Travis FFA program.
