The purchase and installation of new artificial turf for Westlake High School baseball and softball fields was approved by the Eanes ISD board of trustees at the March 27 regular meeting. The total cost will be $765,944, and the projects are anticipated to be completed prior to the 2019 baseball and softball seasons. In September 2015 the district received a $2 million donation from Tires Made Easy Inc. specifically for the purpose of upgrading and/or improving district sports fields. “Over the course of several years, the district has conducted several field improvement committee meetings in order to identify current EISD fields to be upgraded for increased Westlake youth sports play in a way that preserves the community atmosphere and respects neighbors' homes,” information in the March 27 board packet said. The committee consisted of youth sports and community members along with district representatives. The initial phase of projects funded by the donation was completed in 2017 and included putting in turf and LED sports lighting in Practice Field 3—next to the softball complex at Westlake High School—and LED sports lighting at Hill Country Middle School. About $1.1 million of the donated funds was spent on those first-phase projects. The committee developed a recommendation for the use of the remainder of the donated funds. The recommendation, as listed in the board packet, is for installation of artificial turf at the Westlake High School baseball and softball fields as follows: Baseball fields: Replace the infield grass and dirt surface with artificial turf. Softball fields: Replace the entire field surface with artificial turf. The board also approved a separate agenda item to accept a $26,157 donation from the Westlake High School Chap Club that will also go toward the new turf.
