With Westlake High School posting only 60 percent student attendance on Thursday after a potential threat was made by a student, attendance was back to normal Friday, Claudia McWhorter, Eanes ISD director of communications said. The school reports 96 percent attendance today, an average attendance report for a Friday at Westlake, she said. “While attendance was lower than an average day [on Thursday], for those students who were [at Westlake High School], the day progressed normally,” EISD Superintendent Tom Leonard said in an email to parents. He said the student who allegedly made the threat on social media Wednesday would not return to school until authorities and the district “have fully assessed all aspects of the situation.” Authorities are confident that students and staff are safe, he said. Although some students were picked up early from school by their parents on Thursday, McWhorter said it was mostly because students felt it was a slow day and not because of any additional dangers. “We only had that one threat Wednesday night," she said. "There were a lot of rumors, like one that the student was seen on campus. Those were not true at all.” McWhorter said the district is continuing its investigation by interviewing students and “covering all areas” of the threat, but the school is expected to operate as usual moving forward.
