At the heart of Austin's growing wine scene, one Westlake wine bar aims to bring a new twist to sharing old world rarities.

In 2022, a team of local wine lovers, sommeliers and distributors banded together to create Neighborhood Vintner, a wine bar with nearly 1,000 selections by the glass and custom flights.

In addition to being a casual hangout spot, the wine bar offers monthly wine classes, tasting events and private cellar building.

Quote of note

"There's not a ton of spots around town that really focus on the old world, the classic regions in Europe or allocated wines, ... and especially nowhere where you can sit in an open environment and drink them," Neighborhood Vintner General Manager Krista Church said. "Our niche exists in taking those wines that are hard to come by, that are usually prohibitively expensive, and being able to share them at nonrestaurant prices."

Meet the owners

The owners, Leo and Tiffany Resig, are the co-founders of Resign Wine, a wine brand based in Central and Northern California that serves as the shop's flagship selection.

While the original plan was to open a retail shop for Resign, as longtime Westlake residents, the Resigs recognized their community lacked a space for collectors, casual wine lovers and newbies alike to gather and learn about wine.

Meet the team

As a certified sommelier, Church has over 10 years of experience working as the wine director for local restaurants, such as Jeffery's, Josephine House and Parkside Downtown.

Like many of the staff at Neighborhood Vintner, Church brings a unique background to the table. Her interest in wine began when she was working as a server and attending The University of Texas to study Evolutionary Biology.

"I fell in love with the academic side of wine. It's all about soils, geology, chemistry and also the human element, the history of it," Church said. "I accidentally use my degree every day."

Get involved

For those looking to learn more about wine tasting and regions, the bar offers weekly Sunday School workshops starting at $85.

Additionally, wine-lovers can become members of Neighborhood Vintner's Wine Club, which grants a 10% discount on all purchases, access to tasting and pop-up events, and a free monthly selection of bottles personally curated by Church. Church said the club has already accumulated over 85 members.
