Vicki Bly was taking her daughter to school one morning when she saw a “For sale by owner” sign on the side of the road.

She bought the property before she had a plan, her other daughter and now business partner Sydney Sue said. Bly and Sue started brainstorming about what the Westlake area needed, and that is how they came up with The Wayback—a small resort to be used for corporate retreats, weddings and other gatherings. They also decided to add a cafe and drive-thru coffee bar to the 3 acres of property.

The mother-daughter duo began working on the project in 2014. The land, which is in an unincorporated area on Bee Caves Road, was empty when they purchased it, and they had to have water and electricity installed.

Bly owned The Vermont House, a bed and breakfast in downtown Austin, in the 1990s, and Sue went to school for event planning and business.

The Wayback is scheduled to open in October, with the cafe portion opening in November.
