The Lakeway City Council has approved $20,000 from its Hotel Occupancy Tax fund to go to the Lakeway Resort and Spa. City documents state the funding would cover 50% of a Google pay-per -click advertising campaign to attract visitors to Lakeway for summer vacation. “We really need business during the week,” Lisa Crowell, director of sales and marketing for the Lakeway Resort and Spa, said during the April 8 special City Council meeting. “May 15 through Labor Day is peak season during the weekends for the hotel, but we definitely need to drive more business during the weekdays,” Council member Laurie Higginbotham asked what the benefit to the city would be, to which Crowell responded that many travelers frequent businesses in the area along RM 620. As one example, the Lakeway Resort and Spa hosts weddings that would benefit area businesses such as floral shops. “I think this is as close to appropriate use of the hotel tax as we’ve seen, so I think we ought to go for this,” Councilman Keith Trecker said.
