Rollingwood City Council accepted a bid from Adventures Outback, LP on Nov. 15 to replace the majority of the city’s existing stop signs at a cost of $25,500.
The city will replace 73 of the 79 stop signs within the city limits with new, 7-foot stop signs.
City Administrator Amber Lewis said the city’s stop signs are currently 6 feet tall. Based on uniform traffic standards stop signs are required to be 7 feet tall, making the Rollingwood signs out of compliance, she said.
Because the signs are out of compliance, Rollingwood Police Department has in the past had trouble enforcing tickets for stop sign violations, Lewis said.
The city will purchase the new signs using money from its street maintenance reserve fund, she said.
The six stop signs that will not be replaced are located within Texas Department of Transportation right of way and are already in compliance.
City staff could not find a reason why the signs were initially installed at the incorrect height, Lewis said.
