Since March, OG Agave has provided Austin residents with cacti, agave and succulents from its Lake Travis storefront.

“We specialize in rare, unique and mind-blowing plants,” OG Agave co-owner Matthew Shreves said.

As a child, Matthew developed a love for collecting cacti, an interest he said soon became an obsession. In 2017, Matthew and his wife and co-owner, Mary Caroline Shreves, started an Instagram account under the name OG Agave, highlighting their Austin backyard’s landscaping as well as other “unique, rare and exclusive” plants they came across, Matthew said.

Quickly garnering a large following on Instagram, the couple began selling plants online and out of their home in 2019.

After 20 years in real estate, Matthew decided to focus on the plant business full time, opening a storefront with Mary Caroline in March off RM 620.

“The word of mouth and the local community support has really been outstanding,” Matthew said. “Everyone that comes in tells three or four, and then they bring in two, and it just kind of multiplies.”

OG Agave offers more than 1,000 cacti, agave and succulents online and in-store, ranging from $5-$1,500. The store also takes appointments.

The couple sources succulents from Central Texas, big cacti and agave from Arizona and California, and imports specialty plants from Italy. Yard landscaping and plant arrangements also are offered.

The shop’s most popular plant is whale’s tongue agave, a large agave used for landscaping that can survive in below-freezing temperatures, Matthew said. The crested Mexican fence post cactus, an indigenous plant from Mexico, is one of the rarest plants featured in the shop.

“We’ve got everything from rare, unique and exclusive to starter succulents and ready-to-go arrangements for any occasion,” Matthew said. “We’ve got something for everybody.”
