Though a permanent home for the art piece has not yet been decided, Lakeway City Council accepted a donation in the form of a bronze sculpture valued at $150,000 titled “The Game.”
Council voted unanimously to accept the art installation during the July 15 regular meeting.
The installation is a five-piece sculpture by artist Robert Holmes, who died two years ago. Former owners John and Judy Hogge donated the sculpture for residents to enjoy, and the Lakeway Arts Committee voted to accept the pieces, according to city documents.
The sculpture was initially slated to be placed at the Fred and Linda Wells Water Feature garden behind the Lakeway Activity Center, but Janet Wright, the chairperson of the Lakeway Arts Committee, told council a location on Lakeway Boulevard might also be an ideal location for the statue.
Wright said the committee could decide where to place the statue as soon as a week from July 15. Information from the city states the sculpture is valued at $150,000, and Wright said that price is up from $100,000 following the Holmes’ death.
Wright also laid out goals for the Lakeway Arts Committee during the July 15 City Council meeting, with the visual and performing arts factoring heavily into the body’s vision, especially as they pertain to the city’s combined creative and economic goals.
Other facets of the arts Wright said her committee would pursue include studio space in Lakeway; publicizing local art events in various media throughout the area, including a monthly arts calendar; and helping to build a community arts facility.
