We Are Blood, formerly The Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas and the sole provider of blood to Central Texas hospitals, is experiencing a shortage of Type O-negative and -positive blood, a universal blood type that can be transfused to any patient. With critical weather advisories sweeping Central Texas and the Labor Day holiday soon approaching Type O blood is in high demand, organization officials say. "Summer and holidays are always a difficult time for blood supply, but with Labor Day around the corner and a hurricane about to make landfall, we are in an especially tough situation," said Marshall Cothran, chief executive officer for We Are Blood. "We were already at a critical level and then [Aug. 24] we saw a massive transfusion that completely depleted our blood supply. With very limited blood on the shelves to make it through the weekend, we need the community to step up and help out by donating blood. Not only is our need magnified, but our neighbors in the hurricane zone may need us as well." We Are Blood Donors who give blood by Aug. 28 will receive a voucher for a free milkshake from P. Terry's.[/caption] A recent press release stated eligible donors are encouraged to visit one of the three We Are Blood locations or an upcoming mobile drive as soon as possible. In appreciation, donors who visit a blood center or mobile drive before Aug. 28 will receive one free P. Terry’s milkshake voucher.
