Northbound drivers looking to enter I-35 near Williams Drive will need to use the entrance ramp south of Northwest Drive after the Texas Department of Transportation closed the ramp before Williams on Aug. 27.

This closure is part of TxDOT’s $61.7 million project to build a diverging diamond interchange on the Williams bridge over I-35.

A closer look

Bradley Wheelis, a public information officer for TxDOT, said the entrance ramp closure is permanent.

The construction plan for the DDI includes a bypass lane on I-35 that will allow drivers to avoid the Williams intersection and enter I-35 using the permanent ramp north of Williams, Wheelis said in an email.

He said only northbound entrance ramps are affected by the ongoing construction.

Construction on the DDI, which will temporarily guide traffic to the left side of the road on the Williams bridge, has been underway since October 2020.

What’s next

Wheelis said as of early September, crews continue to work on the bridge over I-35.

The entire DDI project is expected to be complete in late 2023, and the intersection will open upon completion, Wheelis said.
